Since the beginning of the comic book era, comic books were designed to be appealing to male readers specifically young boys. They featured predominantly male characters in genres that were considered more male focused like action adventure, sci-fi, detective stories, etc. In older comics females tend to be secondary characters and also, they were usually portrayed as an ultimate sex symbol or weak and frail. Many women were given these unrealistic bodies and they were draw with huge breasts and half naked appearance to entice male readers. Male leads in the comics had to always save the women and that showed that males were “stronger” and females “needed” a man. In age of sexism in the 1930s to about 1960s women in comic books were portrayed based on the ideals of time period and since most of the writers of the comics were male during that time, it is no surprise that women were depicted in such a negative light.
