The possible reason for Kendra and Austin’s memories to be so different in regard to abuse by Kendra’s husband could be that Kendra is repressing her memories. She remembers being physically abused twice in their sex-years marriage, whereas Austin remembers the abuse taking place every-day. Kendra forgets much of the abuse and is keeping it repressed, most likely due to a type of post-traumatic stress disorder. Kendra fears about hearing the sound of a specific motorcycle shows that the memories are still there but repressed. Austin’s memory is based on observational learning, where he is able to recollect the event of abuse he observed on his mother.
